How to choose science fiction books for children

Why is it that science fiction books sell more, and faster at that, than contemporary fiction? Well, first of all, contemporary fiction depicts everyday life when an increasing number of people prefer to read about out of this world plots and quirky characters armed with laser swords. Science fiction books offer flexibility to the author because of its limitless possibilities where plot is concerned.

Recognizing this popularity, many science fiction publishers are also publishing science fiction books for children. These kinds of books are great for older children who are entering high school years. Because of the breadth of imagination offered in these books, they stimulate creativity in children’s minds.

If you want to get your child into the habit of reading science fiction books, here’s a short guide for you:

  1. Evaluate your child’s comprehension and level of maturity. Have him read the first few pages of a sci-fi book and ask if he liked or understood the story.
  2. Consider your child’s sensitivity to the story and characters in the book. Is he easily frightened by pictures and narration in the book? Thus, choose child-friendly sci-fi stories eliciting imageries rather than fright to your child.
  3. It’s unavoidable to have some amount of violence in science fiction books so you decide what kind and how much violence is okay. It would be perfect to read the book in advance to see if it’s appropriate to your child.
  4. Ask a librarian or bookstore clerk for popular sci-fi books with child-friendly plots. He or she would certainly be able to show you many titles, so choose from there.
  5. Choose science fiction books written for a general audience as these are often the ones with milder plots, less scary characters, and more pleasant stories.
  6. The internet is a chockfull of information on award-winning sci-fi books. Winners of Caldecott and Newberry awards usually are excellent so go for these books.
